About Masjid India, Johor Bahru

Masjid India Johor Bahru stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of community legacy and historical significance in Johor Bahru.

In the early 20th century, a notable figure—Syed Hassan bin Ahmad Alattas—left behind a significant estate. Upon his passing, the Supreme Court of Johor Bahru appointed Estate and Trust Agencies (1927) Limited as the Trustees responsible for managing his property and affairs.

By a court order dated 26 October 1937, the Trustees were officially recognized and given authority to manage and act on behalf of the estate. Over time, to further the estate’s development and fulfil its purpose, another court order issued on 13 December 1948 allowed the Trustees to sell some of the estate’s land and property through public auction—under strict oversight and price control by the court.

A key moment occurred on 3 March 1951, when a public auction was held by Ching Kong Lee & Co. Ltd. in Johor Bahru. During this event, Haji Mohamed Ibrahim and A. Abdul Majid, respected local merchants, successfully bid for a portion of the estate's land—described in legal terms as the “Second Schedule”.

This transfer marked the beginning of a new chapter. The purchased land later became home to Masjid India Johor Bahru, a mosque built by and for the Indian-Muslim community in the heart of Johor Bahru.

What began as a legal process of estate management evolved into a meaningful community initiative, rooted in legacy and faith. MIJB today reflects a heritage of trust, unity, and devotion—built on lands once tied to history, now dedicated to serving generations of Muslims in Johor Bahru.
